Pansexuals, Heterosexuals and Pomosexuals, Oh My

Dear Sappho,

I thought that your "Bisexuals are Not Gay" was a nice post. Don't forget about pansexuality, which I've seen a great amount of pansexuals lately, which is where they are completely 50/50 on their sexuality. They prefer nothing over anything.

    Indeed, how could I have forgotten pansexuals, or for that matter, pomosexuals, metrosexuals or retrosexuals. There are apparently more ways of being sexual than previously thought or believed. I had to look a few of them up. Pomosexuals deliberately reject or avoid any sexual orientation labels, preferring NOT to be limited to sexual identities like heterosexual, bisexual or homosexual.

    Pansexuals, also sometimes referred to as omnisexuals or polysexuals, are blind to gender and have the potential to form sexual and or romantic attractions to people of all sexes and genders. Pansexualism is also an hypothesis in psychological terms that the sexual instinct plays the primary part in all human activity, mental and physical. People who are pansexual may be attracted to various different forms of romance without regard to gender. Anything goes as long as the attraction and sexual instinct is authentically aroused. Whereas a literal definition of bisexuality is sexual or romantic attraction to two (bi) sexes; males and females or to two genders; men and women

    Some suggest that pansexuality is more accurately described by being more human- or person-oriented, falling for the person inside the body than the body itself. In some ways this seems to be the natural inclination for spiritual attraction leading to physical attraction. Despite the fluidity of sexuality, some may have a preference. A person who is pansexual may be attracted to all genders and sexes, but have a preference, (for example) for pre-operative transsexual people, feminine lesbians, intersexed people, etc.

    Metrosexuals come from urban, post-industrial, capitalist cultures. Usually considered to be straight men that spend a lot of time and money on shopping and appearance. The female version would be Sex and the City types. Retrosexuals are the opposite of metrosexuals; a traditionally masculine man who rejects focus on physical appearance. However, lately the term was used describe men who subscribed to the grooming and dress standards of another era.

    The various sexual labels and ways of being may be partly due to the various evolving phases of emotional growth and sexual being. There are times in youth when we may have been more sexually adventuresome or curious before deciding to identify with one label or another. Whichever label you agree or disagree with we all need to remember the human rights summed up so succulently in the Declaration of Independence: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all people are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

    Sexuality may be equally influenced by social and biological constraints and expectations but it may defy and /or eventually transcend all of them as well, but in the meantime everyone has the right to pursue their own pathway to sexuality. I hope we all find love with like minded souls along the way.
